2 Chronicles 33:6
“And he caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the son of Hinnom: also he observed times, and used enchantments, and used witchcraft, and dealt with a familiar spirit, and with wizards: he wrought much evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger.”
Context: The verse is part of a description of the reign of King Manasseh of Judah. Manasseh was one of the most wicked kings of Judah, who led the nation into idolatry and practiced occultic activities. The verse highlights some of his specific sins that led to his condemnation.
Passing children through the fire: This refers to the pagan practice of sacrificing children to the pagan god Molech. It involved passing children through fire as an offering, which was a detestable practice condemned by God (Leviticus 18:21, Deuteronomy 12:31).
Observing times, enchantments, and witchcraft: Manasseh engaged in various forms of divination and occultic practices, seeking guidance from sources other than God. God had strictly forbidden such practices among His people (Deuteronomy 18:10-12).
Dealing with a familiar spirit and wizards: Manasseh sought the guidance of mediums and those who claimed to have contact with the spirit world. God had explicitly prohibited consulting mediums and practicing sorcery (Leviticus 19:31, Leviticus 20:27).
Provoking God’s anger: Manasseh’s actions were an affront to God, provoking His righteous anger. God had repeatedly warned His people against turning to idols and engaging in occult practices, as they defiled their relationship with Him and violated His commandments.
- God’s commands are not to be taken lightly: The passage underscores the seriousness of disobeying God’s commandments. We must be careful to follow God’s instructions and avoid practices that are contrary to His will.
- The dangers of idolatry and occult practices: Manasseh’s actions led the nation astray and incurred God’s wrath. We should guard against any form of idolatry and occult involvement, seeking God’s guidance and relying on His Word alone.
- The consequences of disobedience: Manasseh’s wickedness brought judgment upon himself and the nation. It is a reminder for us to consider the consequences of our actions and strive to live in accordance with God’s will.
