2 Chronicles 34:27

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

Because thine heart was tender, and thou didst humble thy selfe before God, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst thy selfe before me, and diddest rend thy clothes, and weepe before me, I haue euen heard thee also, saith the Lord. 2 Chronicles 34:27 (KJV)

This verse is part of the account of King Josiah’s reign in Judah.

Josiah was a righteous king who sought to bring spiritual revival to the nation by restoring the worship of the true God and purging the land of idolatry.

In 2 Chronicles 34:27, the prophetess Huldah delivers a message from God to King Josiah after the Book of the Law (likely referring to the book of Deuteronomy) was discovered in the temple during its restoration.

Tender heart: God acknowledges Josiah’s tender heart.

It indicates that Josiah was receptive to God’s message and was genuinely concerned about the spiritual state of the nation.

A tender heart is open to God’s leading and sensitive to His voice.

Humility before God: Josiah humbled himself before God.

Humility is a crucial attitude for a person seeking a relationship with God.

Josiah recognized his own insufficiency and acknowledged his dependence on God.

Responding to God’s word: Josiah heard the words of God delivered through Huldah regarding the consequences of the nation’s idolatry and disobedience.

He didn’t ignore or reject God’s message but responded with humility, repentance, and a deep sense of sorrow.

Rending clothes and weeping: Josiah’s response to God’s message was intense.

Rending one’s clothes was a traditional sign of mourning and distress, expressing deep remorse.

Josiah’s weeping demonstrated his genuine repentance and sorrow for the sins of the nation.

God’s response: In response to Josiah’s humility, repentance, and tender heart, God heard him.

God affirms that He has listened to Josiah’s cries and acknowledges his actions.

It highlights God’s faithfulness to respond to genuine repentance and humility.

The Lord notes that He has heard Josiah’s prayer and seen his tears, recognizing the king’s sincere repentance.

While the exact phrase “tender heart” is not in the verse, the surrounding context shows that Josiah’s concern for the nation’s spiritual state moves him to humble prayer.

Josiah’s response to the prophetic warning includes traditional signs of mourning such as tearing his garments and weeping, demonstrating deep remorse for the nation’s sins.

Because of Josiah’s humility and heartfelt repentance, God affirms that He has listened to him, highlighting divine faithfulness toward those who turn sincerely to Him.

This passage underscores the importance of approaching God with humility and a contrite heart.

It reveals God’s willingness to respond to genuine repentance.

The example of King Josiah reminds readers of the power of personal repentance and the significance of turning to God in times of spiritual crisis.
