Context: 2 Chronicles 35:9 is part of the account of King Josiah’s reforms and the celebration of the Passover. King Josiah sought to restore the worship of the Lord and the observance of the Passover according to the Law of Moses. In 2 Chronicles 35:9 (KJV), the passage states: “And the Levites gave the passover offerings, even the priests, the children of Aaron, which were at the altar, and the Levites that were chief of the families, according to the number of the families of the children of Levi.” The Passover was a significant feast in the Jewish calendar, commemorating the deliverance of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. It was a time of remembrance, sacrifice, and dedication to God. The Passover commemorates Israel’s deliverance from Egypt and foreshadows Christ’s sacrificial death as the ultimate Passover Lamb. The Passover pointed forward to the coming of Jesus Christ, who would become the ultimate Passover Lamb, offering Himself as a sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins. The Levites were chosen by God to assist the priests in the worship and service of the Tabernacle and later the Temple. They had various responsibilities, including caring for the sacred objects, assisting in sacrifices, and leading worship. In this verse, we see that the Levites played a role in providing offerings for the Passover. In this verse, we see the generosity of the Levites. Conaniah, Shemaiah, Nethaneel, Hashabiah, Jeiel, and Jozabad, who were chief Levites, gave a significant number of animals as offerings for the Passover. Their giving demonstrated their commitment to worshiping God and honoring His commands. It serves as an example of sacrificial giving and wholehearted devotion to the Lord. Believers today can learn from this example: valuing remembrance of Christ’s sacrifice through practices like communion, practicing sacrificial giving, and working together in unity to advance God’s purposes. As believers, we can draw several lessons from this verse. Firstly, we should value and participate in the remembrance of important events in our faith, such as the Lord’s Supper or communion, which symbolizes Christ’s sacrifice. Secondly, we should emulate the spirit of generosity and sacrificial giving displayed by the Levites. Our giving should be a reflection of our love for God and our commitment to support His work. Lastly, we should recognize the importance of unity and collaboration among believers. The Levites worked together to provide for the Passover offerings, highlighting the significance of teamwork and shared responsibility within the body of Christ.
