Posted on 18 May at 11:39

Iehoiakim was twentie and fiue yeres old when he began to reigne, and he reigned eleuen yeeres in Ierusalem: and hee did that which was euill in the sight of the Lord his God. 2 Chronicles 36:5 (KJV)

Jehoiakim

was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem: and he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD his God. 2 Chronicles 36:5 (KJV)

Historical Context: 2 Chronicles 36:5 concludes the book of 2 Chronicles, summarizing the kings of Judah and the events that led to the Babylonian exile. Jehoiakim was the son of King Josiah and the brother of King Jehoahaz, and he reigned in Jerusalem for eleven years, approximately 609 to 598 BC.

The Reign of Jehoiakim: The verse records that Jehoiakim did evil in the sight of the Lord his God. Throughout his reign he disregarded God’s commands, embraced idolatry, shed innocent blood, oppressed his own people, and rebelled against Babylonian rule. His actions steered the nation of Judah further into sin.

Consequences of Jehoiakim’s Actions: Jehoiakim’s wickedness brought severe repercussions for Judah. His rebellion against Babylon provoked King Nebuchadnezzar’s forces to invade the land. Jerusalem was besieged, the temple was plundered and destroyed, and many were taken captive to Babylon. After Jehoiakim’s death, his son Jehoiachin faced continued Babylonian pressure, leading to further sieges and, ultimately, the exile of the nation.

Lessons for Today:

  • The importance of obedience: Jehoiakim’s reign illustrates the far‑reaching consequences of disobeying God’s commands, reminding believers that obedience to God’s will is essential for personal and communal well‑being.
  • The danger of idolatry: His embrace of false gods warns against the allure of worldly influences and calls believers to keep their hearts devoted to the one true God.
  • Leadership and responsibility: The king’s impact on the spiritual and moral condition of his nation underscores the need for leaders to act with integrity, righteousness, and a commitment to God’s ways.
  • The consequences of sin: The account serves as a sobering reminder that sin can lead to destruction not only in individual lives but also in communities and nations, urging a pursuit of righteousness and repentance.

In summary, 2 Chronicles 36:5 portrays Jehoiakim as an evil king whose disregard for God’s commands set in motion events that led to the downfall of Jerusalem. The passage calls readers to heed the importance of obedience, the dangers of idolatry, the weight of leadership, and the serious consequences of sin.
