2 Chronicles 5:9

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

And they drew out the staues of the Arke, that the ends of the staues were seene from the Arke before the Oracle, but they were not seene without. And there it is vnto this day. 2 Chronicles 5:9 (KJV)

The book of 2 Chronicles records the history of the kings of Judah, beginning with Solomon’s reign and continuing through the later monarchs. This passage describes the moment when the Ark of the Covenant was transferred from the tabernacle to the newly built temple that Solomon had erected in Jerusalem.

The verse states that the staves were drawn out so that the ends of the staves could be seen from the Holy Place before the oracle, but they were not visible outside the temple, and that they remain there to this day. This detail emphasizes the permanent placement of the Ark within the sanctuary.

The Ark of the Covenant was a sacred symbol of God’s presence among Israel. According to 1 Kings 8:9, it contained only the two tablets of stone. The Ark represented the throne of God, and its placement in the Most Holy Place (the oracle) signified God’s dwelling in the midst of His people.

The staves, or poles, were used to carry the Ark during its transport. Once the Ark was set in the temple, the staves were no longer needed for movement. Their ends being visible from the Holy Place but not from the outside highlights the Ark’s fixed, reverent position within the sanctuary.

The concealed staves serve as a symbol of the hidden and sacred nature of God’s presence. They remind believers that God’s holiness is not to be taken lightly or displayed casually, but approached with deep reverence.

Lessons for believers emerge from this picture. First, the hidden staves teach us to approach God with reverence, humility, and awe, recognizing His majesty. Second, while the Ark was a physical representation of God’s presence, today the Holy Spirit dwells in the hearts of believers, so God’s presence is not limited to a particular building but can be experienced wherever we are.

The concluding phrase, “and there it is unto this day,” underscores the enduring nature of God’s presence and His faithfulness to His people throughout the ages. It serves as a reminder that God remains with His people, constant and everlasting.

In sum, 2 Chronicles 5:9 offers insight into the significance of the Ark of the Covenant and the hidden staves, urging believers to maintain reverence for God’s presence, to trust in His unchanging nature, and to recognize that He dwells with His people today.
