2 Chronicles 7:2

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

“And the priests could not enter into the house of the LORD, because the glory of the LORD had filled the LORD’S house.”

Context:The book of 2 Chronicles is a historical account that focuses on the reign of King Solomon and the construction of the temple in Jerusalem. Chapter 7 describes the dedication of the temple and the response of God to Solomon’s prayer.

The Dedication of the Temple:In the preceding verses (2 Chronicles 7:1), Solomon had finished praying and fire came down from heaven, consuming the burnt offerings and sacrifices. The glory of the Lord filled the temple, demonstrating God’s acceptance of the temple as a place of worship.

The Glory of the Lord:The glory of the Lord is a manifestation of His presence and power. It often appeared as a cloud or a bright light. In this verse, the glory of the Lord’s presence was so overwhelming that the priests were unable to enter the temple. This signifies the significance of God’s presence and His holiness.

The Significance:The priests, who were responsible for the religious rituals and offerings, were unable to perform their duties due to the overwhelming presence of God. This event highlights the fact that human efforts and rituals are insufficient in the presence of God’s glory. It emphasizes the supremacy of God and the need for a humble and reverent approach to worship.

Application:As believers today, we can learn several lessons from this verse:

  • Reverence in Worship:We should approach God with awe and reverence, acknowledging His greatness and holiness. Our worship should be sincere and focused on God, not on rituals or traditions.
  • Dependency on God:The priests’ inability to enter the temple reminds us that our own efforts are inadequate. We are dependent on God’s grace and His presence in our lives. We should rely on Him for guidance, strength, and wisdom.
  • The Presence of God:The temple was a physical place where God’s glory dwelled. However, after Jesus’ death and resurrection, believers became the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). We should cultivate an awareness of God’s presence in our lives and seek to honor Him in all that we do.
  • Humility:The priests’ inability to enter the temple serves as a reminder of our need for humility. We should approach God with a humble heart, acknowledging our weaknesses and sins, and seeking His forgiveness and mercy.
