2 Chronicles 7:21

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

And this house which is high, shall be an astonishment to euery one that passeth by it; so that hee shall say; Why hath the Lord done thus vnto this land, and vnto this house? 2 Chronicles 7:21 (KJV)

This verse is part of God’s response to Solomon after the completion of the temple in Jerusalem. In answer to Solomon’s prayer, God appeared to him, affirmed His presence, and confirmed the covenant with Solomon and the people of Israel. At the same time He warned that if the people turned away from Him and embraced idolatry, the land and the temple would become a cause of astonishment and questioning.

The significance of the temple is evident in its description as “high.” The temple was a magnificent structure and a visible symbol of God’s presence among His people. Its grandeur was meant to inspire awe and reverence in all who saw it, serving as a physical reminder of God’s faithfulness and the Israelites’ commitment to worship Him.

The consequences of disobedience are plainly stated. Should Israel turn from God, the temple and the land would lose their blessing, God’s presence would withdraw, and the nation would become a negative testimony among the nations. This serves as a reminder that disobedience to God’s commands brings loss of blessings and a tarnished reputation for God among the peoples.

The passage also highlights the impact of the people’s actions on God’s reputation. When believers live in obedience and righteousness, they bring glory to God’s name; when they disobey, they tarnish His reputation and invite criticism.

God’s desire for repentance and restoration is woven through the warning. The astonishment and questioning are meant as a wake‑up call, urging the people to repent, seek forgiveness, and restore their relationship with God. God is gracious and merciful, longing for reconciliation with His people.

Application:

Reverence for God’s presence: Although the temple no longer stands, believers can still cultivate a sense of reverence for God’s presence through worship, prayer, and seeking His will.

Faithful obedience: Christians should be mindful of their actions and the impact those actions have on God’s reputation. Their lives ought to reflect their faith and a commitment to obey God’s commands.

Repentance and restoration: When believers stray from God’s path, this passage reminds them of the importance of repentance and seeking God’s forgiveness, trusting in His mercy and desire to restore.

Sharing God’s glory: Our choices can either bring glory to God or detract from it. By living in obedience and righteousness, believers serve as a testimony to God’s goodness and faithfulness, drawing others to Him.

Finally, readers are encouraged to study the entire chapter and its surrounding verses to gain a deeper understanding of the passage and its application to daily life.
