Listen to this article

Let such a one thinke this: that such as we are in word by letters, when we are absent, such will we be also in deede when we are present. 2 Corinthians 10:11 (KJV)

Context: To fully understand a verse, it’s important to consider its literary and historical setting. In 2 Corinthians 10:11 Paul is responding to a criticism that some of his letters were not written entirely by his own hand. He points out that opponents were questioning the authenticity of his correspondence rather than addressing his apostolic authority or personal consistency. Paul wants his readers to know that while he may have employed amanuenses, the content of his letters represents his apostolic authority. The focus of the verse is on the legitimacy of his written words, not on a comparison between his spoken and written behavior. Paul also emphasizes that there is no disparity between what he writes in his letters and how he behaves in person. His goal is to maintain integrity and authenticity in his ministry. He wants to assure the Corinthians that what they read from him in his letters reflects who he truly is and what he stands for. This underscores the importance of credibility and trustworthy communication in ministry. Maintaining confidence that the teachings conveyed in his letters are genuinely his helps preserve the credibility of his leadership. The principle is still applicable today, as believers should strive to align their words and actions, maintaining honesty and integrity in their interactions. Hypocrisy and inconsistency can undermine our witness and hinder our effectiveness in sharing God’s love. Ultimately, the call is to let Christ’s truth shape both our words and actions, so that our testimony is coherent and reliable. Jesus consistently lived out His teachings and embodied the values of the Kingdom of God, and we are called to imitate Christ. In summary, 2 Corinthians 10:11 deals with questions about the authorship of Paul’s letters and underscores the importance of authentic, credible communication in the Christian faith. It also reminds us of the importance of consistency in our words and deeds, encouraging us to reflect Christ’s character in every aspect of life.
