Listen to this article

“But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.”

Certainly! Here is a Bible study on the given verse and its context.

The book of 2 Corinthians is a letter written by the apostle Paul to the church in Corinth. In this particular verse, Paul is addressing the issue of false apostles and teachers who were trying to undermine his authority and distort the message of the Gospel. He encourages the Corinthians to find their boasting and confidence not in themselves or their achievements, but in the Lord.

Context:

To gain a better understanding of the chapter and the immediate context of verse 17, one should read 2 Corinthians 10:1-18. Note the contrast between Paul’s meekness in person and his boldness in his letters (2 Corinthians 10:1). Identify the main theme and purpose of Paul’s argument in this chapter.

Understanding the Context:

Read 2 Corinthians 10:1-18 to gain a better understanding of the chapter and the immediate context of verse 17.

Note the contrast between Paul’s meekness in person and his boldness in his letters (2 Corinthians 10:1).

Identify the main theme and purpose of Paul’s argument in this chapter.

The Nature of Boasting:

What does it mean to boast? Discuss the positive and negative aspects of boasting.

Consider the cultural context of boasting in the Corinthian society. How might this have influenced the church’s perspective on boasting?

The Object of Glorying:

Explore the significance of Paul’s emphasis on “the Lord” as the object of glorying.

Why is it important for believers to find their source of confidence and boasting in the Lord?

Reflect on other biblical passages that emphasize glorying in the Lord, such as Jeremiah 9:23-24 and Galatians 6:14.

Pride versus Humility:

Discuss the dangers of pride and self-glorification in the life of a believer.

How does glorying in the Lord relate to humility before God and others?

Consider Paul’s example of boasting in weaknesses and the power of Christ (2 Corinthians 12:9-10).

Application:

  • Evaluate your own motivations for boasting or seeking recognition. Are they centered on yourself or the Lord?
  • How can you practically shift your focus from self-glorification to glorifying the Lord in your actions, words, and attitudes?
  • Explore ways to cultivate humility in your daily life and relationships.

Remember to pray and seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit as you study God’s Word. Allow the insights gained from this study to shape your understanding of glorifying the Lord and to transform your relationship with Him.
