2 Corinthians 10:8

Listen to this article

“For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed.”

Context:The book of 2 Corinthians was written by the apostle Paul to the church in Corinth. In this particular chapter, Paul addresses the challenges and opposition he faced from false teachers who questioned his authority and criticized his ministry. Paul defends his ministry and apostolic authority, emphasizing that his authority was given by the Lord for the purpose of edifying believers.

Boasting in Authority:Paul acknowledges the false accusations brought against him and chooses to respond by boasting “somewhat more” about his authority. However, it’s important to note that Paul’s intention is not to boast for personal gain or to elevate himself. Rather, his aim is to clarify the nature of his authority for the benefit of the Corinthians.

Authority for Edification:Paul emphasizes that the authority he possesses was given to him by the Lord. This divine authority was not meant for destruction or tearing down the believers but for edification. The word “edification” refers to the building up, strengthening, and spiritual growth of the church. Paul’s goal is to promote the spiritual well-being and maturity of the Corinthians through the exercise of his authority.

No Shame in Boasting:Paul asserts that if he were to boast about his authority, he would not be ashamed. Here, Paul is not expressing arrogance but rather confidence in the legitimacy and purpose of his apostolic calling. He understands that his authority comes from God and is used for the benefit of the church. Therefore, there is no reason for him to be ashamed of speaking about it.

Application:This verse reminds us of the importance of authority exercised in a Christ-like manner. Christian leaders, pastors, and teachers should seek to use their authority to build up and encourage others, promoting spiritual growth rather than causing harm or destruction. Additionally, it encourages believers to discern and respect the proper authorities that God has established within the Church for their edification and spiritual benefit.

  • In summary:2 Corinthians 10:8 highlights the purpose and nature of Paul’s authority as an apostle.
  • It serves as a reminder that authority should be used for the edification and spiritual growth of believers.
  • As we study this verse, we are encouraged to use any authority we have been given in a way that benefits and builds up others, following Paul’s example and understanding that our authority ultimately comes from God.
