Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should vse sharpnesse, according to the power which the Lord hath giuen me to edification, and not to destruction. 2 Corinthians 13:10 (KJV)

Context: The book of 2 Corinthians is a letter written by the apostle Paul to the church in Corinth. In this particular section, Paul is addressing some challenges and conflicts within the church. He had previously visited Corinth and had plans to visit again. However, in his absence, he is writing this letter to address certain issues.

Communicating through Writing: Paul begins by explaining that he is writing these things while absent, meaning he is not physically present with the Corinthians. His purpose for writing is to address the concerns and conflicts in a manner that is beneficial for the church. This indicates the importance of effective communication, even when face-to-face interaction is not possible.

Using Sharpness and Power: Paul mentions the possibility of using “sharpness” when he is present with them. This refers to a strong and direct rebuke or correction. However, he clarifies that he would only exercise this authority if necessary and according to the power that the Lord has given him. Using Judgment: Paul mentions the possibility of using “judgment” when he is present with them.

Paul recognises that his authority comes from God and must be used for the purpose of edification (building up) rather than destruction. Edification and Not Destruction: The primary goal of Paul’s authority, as given by the Lord, is the edification or spiritual growth of the Corinthian church. Edification involves the process of building up and strengthening believers in their faith, knowledge, and character. Paul’s intention is not to tear down or destroy the church, but to guide them in a way that leads to their spiritual well‑being. Goal of the Authority: While the verse itself does not specify the purpose of the authority, Paul’s broader teaching elsewhere shows that his aim is the edification—or spiritual growth—of the Corinthian church rather than its destruction.

Application: This verse teaches us several important lessons. Firstly, it emphasises the significance of effective communication, even when face-to-face interaction is not possible. We should make use of available means to communicate in a way that promotes understanding, reconciliation, and spiritual growth. Secondly, it reminds us that any authority or power we have should be used responsibly and in accordance with God’s will. Our actions and words should be aimed at building up others and fostering their spiritual growth, rather than causing harm or destruction.

Overall: 2 Corinthians 13:10 highlights the importance of effective communication, responsible use of authority, and the goal of edification in the context of addressing conflicts within the church.
