2 Corinthians 3:10
For euen that which was made glorious, had no glorie in this respect by reason of the glorie that excelleth. 2 Corinthians 3:10 (KJV)
Context: To fully understand this verse, it is important to consider its context. In the preceding verses, the Apostle Paul discusses the ministry of the New Covenant, which is characterized by the Spirit of God. He contrasts the New Covenant with the Old Covenant, which was written on tablets of stone and brought condemnation. In verse 7, Paul refers to the ministry of the old covenant and alludes to the fading glory associated with Moses’ veil on Mount Sinai.
Comparison of Glories: In verse 10, Paul contrasts the glory of the Old Covenant with the surpassing glory of the New Covenant. He suggests that even though the Old Covenant had glory, it pales in comparison to the glory of the New Covenant. The glory of the Old Covenant was external and temporary, whereas the glory of the New Covenant is internal and eternal.
The Excelling Glory: Paul emphasises that the glory of the New Covenant excels or surpasses the glory of the Old Covenant. The New Covenant is characterised by the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, who transforms the hearts and lives of believers. This glory is superior because it brings righteousness, freedom, and life through Jesus Christ.
The Unveiled Glory: In the preceding verses (2 Corinthians 3:7‑9), Paul talks about the veil that Moses used to cover his face after encountering God’s glory on Mount Sinai. This veil prevented the Israelites from fully seeing the fading glory. However, under the New Covenant, the veil is removed through Christ, and believers can behold God’s glory without hindrance. It is the glory of God revealed in Jesus Christ, which brings salvation and transformation.
“But even we all, with open face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.”
Application: This verse reminds believers that we are living under the New Covenant, which surpasses the glory of the Old Covenant. As Christians, we have the privilege of experiencing the surpassing glory of God through Christ. We have direct access to God’s presence through the Holy Spirit, and His glory is continually transforming us into His image. It is important for us to seek this glory, to be filled with the Holy Spirit, and to allow His transforming power to work in and through us.
Overall: 2 Corinthians 3:10 highlights the superiority of the glory of the New Covenant over the Old Covenant. It points to the surpassing glory found in Christ and the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, which brings transformation and life.
