2 Corinthians 5:7

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”

Context:The apostle Paul wrote the second letter to the Corinthians to address various issues and encourage the believers in their faith. In this particular verse, Paul emphasizes the importance of living by faith rather than relying solely on what is seen.

Walking by Faith:The phrase “we walk by faith” implies that the Christian life is a journey, and the manner in which we navigate this journey is through faith. Walking denotes a continuous action, suggesting that faith should be an ongoing aspect of our lives. Faith is not limited to a one-time decision but should permeate every aspect of our existence. It is a daily reliance on God, trusting His promises, and living in obedience to His Word.

Faith vs. Sight:Paul contrasts walking by faith with walking by sight. While sight refers to the physical senses and the visible world around us, faith goes beyond what we can perceive with our senses. It involves trusting in God’s unseen realities and promises. Faith allows us to grasp the spiritual truths that cannot be comprehended through mere observation or empirical evidence. It is a conviction in things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1).

Trusting God’s Guidance:Walking by faith requires trusting in God’s guidance rather than relying solely on our own understanding. It means acknowledging that God’s ways and plans are higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9) and that His thoughts are beyond our comprehension. By choosing faith over sight, we surrender our limited perspectives and lean on God’s infinite wisdom and sovereignty. It is an act of humility and dependence on Him.

Overcoming Doubt:Walking by faith often involves overcoming doubt and uncertainty. We may face situations where the visible circumstances contradict what we believe or hope for. Yet, as believers, we are called to trust God’s faithfulness even in the face of adversity. This trust in God enables us to navigate through challenges, persevere in difficult times, and find strength in His promises (Romans 4:20-21).

Faith in Jesus Christ:Ultimately, our faith should be centered on Jesus Christ. He is the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). Through faith in Him, we receive forgiveness of sins, reconciliation with God, and eternal life. Our walk of faith should reflect our relationship with Jesus, growing in intimacy with Him, and aligning our lives with His teachings.

  • Cultivate a lifestyle of faith by seeking to deepen your relationship with God through prayer, studying His Word, and fellowship with other believers.
  • When faced with challenging circumstances, choose to trust God’s promises and His faithfulness, even when things seem contrary to what you believe.
  • Be willing to step out of your comfort zone and follow God’s leading, even when you cannot see the full picture.
  • Pray for the Holy Spirit’s guidance and strength to walk by faith and resist the temptations to rely solely on your own understanding.

Remember, living by faith is a lifelong journey, and as you continue to walk by faith, you will experience God’s faithfulness and see His plans unfold in your life.
