2 Corinthians 7:10

“For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.”

Context:To understand a Bible verse fully, it is important to consider its context. In this case, the Apostle Paul is writing a letter to the Corinthian church, addressing various issues and providing instructions. In the preceding verses, Paul refers to a previous letter he had written, which had caused sorrow among the Corinthians but eventually led to their repentance.

Godly Sorrow:Paul contrasts two types of sorrow in this verse. He speaks of “godly sorrow.” This sorrow is a deep sense of remorse or regret that comes from recognizing one’s sins and offenses against God. It is a sorrow that arises out of a genuine understanding of the consequences of sin and a desire to turn away from it.

Repentance:The verse teaches that godly sorrow leads to repentance. Repentance involves a change of heart, mind, and direction. It is not merely feeling sorry, but it is a turning away from sin and a turning towards God. Genuine repentance is characterized by a transformation in behavior, thoughts, and attitudes.

Salvation:The verse emphasizes that godly sorrow leads to salvation. Salvation refers to the forgiveness of sins and reconciliation with God through faith in Jesus Christ. When a person experiences godly sorrow and repents, they receive the gift of salvation and eternal life in Christ.

Not to be Repented of:The phrase “not to be repented of” means that the salvation received through godly sorrow and repentance is a permanent and unchangeable state. It is not something that will be regretted or taken away. God’s forgiveness and salvation are secure for those who genuinely repent and place their faith in Him.

Sorrow of the World:Paul also contrasts godly sorrow with the “sorrow of the world.” The sorrow of the world refers to a worldly or worldly-minded sorrow that does not lead to true repentance. It could be a superficial or temporary sorrow that lacks genuine transformation or a sorrow rooted in self-pity or worldly concerns.

Worketh Death:The sorrow of the world is said to “worketh death.” This means that worldly sorrow leads to spiritual death or separation from God. It does not bring about genuine repentance or salvation but rather perpetuates a cycle of sin and spiritual decay.

Overall, 2 Corinthians 7:10 highlights the importance of godly sorrow and genuine repentance for experiencing salvation and eternal life. It teaches that worldly sorrow is insufficient and leads to spiritual death, while godly sorrow produces repentance and ultimately leads to salvation. It encourages believers to examine their hearts and turn to God with true repentance, seeking His forgiveness and experiencing the transformative power of His grace.
