2 Corinthians 7:14

For if I have boasted any thing to him of you, I am not ashamed; but as we spake all things to you in truth, even so our boasting, which I made before Titus, is found a truth.

The apostle Paul reflects on the joyful vindication of his trust in the Corinthian church. Earlier, he had spoken highly of the Corinthians to his fellow worker, Titus, essentially boasting about their spiritual potential, their responsiveness, and their underlying devotion to the truth. Because of previous tensions and the need for sharp correction, such boasting carried a genuine risk of disappointment. Paul was sending Titus into a potentially volatile situation. However, Paul states he is not ashamed because his confident boasting was entirely justified by their actions. The believers in Corinth had proven his words to be true.

The core of this passage rests on the integrity of communication and the consistency of truth. Paul establishes a direct parallel between his public instruction and his private words. He notes that just as he and his companions spoke all things in truth when directly instructing the Corinthians, so also his confident words to Titus proved to be the absolute truth. When Titus arrived, the believers demonstrated the godly sorrow and repentance that Paul had hoped for. Their genuine spiritual response healed the relational rift and deeply refreshed Titus’s spirit.

This verse serves as a powerful testament to the necessity of truthfulness in all aspects of Christian fellowship. Paul was unwavering in his truthful dealings with the church, even when it required difficult correction, and he was equally truthful and hopeful when speaking about the church to his fellow laborers. His boasting here was not rooted in worldly pride, but rather in a confident, faith-filled expectation of the Holy Spirit's ongoing, transformative work. It highlights the profound encouragement that occurs when believers live up to the spiritual confidence placed in them, producing mutual joy and strengthening the bonds of fellowship.
