2 Corinthians 9:14
And by their prayer for you, which long after you for the exceeding grace of God in you. 2 Corinthians 9:14 (KJV)
Context: The book of 2 Corinthians was written by the apostle Paul to the church in Corinth. In this passage Paul is concluding a section in which he has praised the generosity and cheerful giving of the Corinthian believers and is discussing the generosity and cheerful giving of the Corinthian believers. He commends them for their willingness to give, reminds them of the blessings that come from their generosity, and highlights the link between their prayers and the grace of God.
The power of prayer: The verse begins with the phrase “And by their prayer for you” (or “And by the prayer of the saints”). Paul highlights the importance and effectiveness of prayer. The recipients of the Corinthians’ generosity were praying for them, specifically for the Corinthian believers, and the Corinthian believers were also praying for others, especially for the recipients of their generosity. This emphasizes the spiritual aspect of giving and the role of prayer in supporting and uplifting others.
Longing after you: The verse continues with the phrase “which long after you.” The recipients of the generosity had a deep longing or affection for the Corinthian believers. Their prayer was not merely a formality but came from a genuine desire for the well‑being and spiritual growth of the believers, demonstrating the importance of genuine love and concern for fellow believers.
Exceeding grace of God in you: The verse concludes with the phrase “for the exceeding grace of God in you.” Paul acknowledges that the grace of God was evident in the lives of the Corinthian believers. Their generous and sacrificial giving was a manifestation of the grace they had received from God, a reflection of God’s grace working in and through them rather than merely their own effort.
The verse also highlights the genuine concern and affection that Titus had for the Corinthians, emphasizing the importance of heartfelt support among believers. Overall, 2 Corinthians 9:14 emphasizes the power of prayer, the importance of genuine love and concern for others, and the manifestation of God’s grace in the lives of believers. It encourages us to be mindful of the spiritual aspect of giving and to seek opportunities to support and uplift others through prayer and acts of generosity.
Note: The King James Version (KJV) is used for the interpretation of the verse.
