2 John 1:1

Listen to this article

“The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth.”

Context:The book of 2 John is a short letter written by the apostle John, believed to be the same author of the Gospel of John and the book of Revelation. It is addressed to an “elect lady” and her children, though there is some debate among scholars about whether this is an actual woman and her family or a metaphorical reference to a local church and its members.

The Elder:The author of the letter refers to himself as “the elder.” This term is often interpreted as a title of authority and wisdom within the early Christian community. While the exact identity of the elder is not explicitly stated, many scholars believe it to be the apostle John due to the similarities in style and content with other Johannine writings.

The Elect Lady:The letter is addressed to the “elect lady” and her children. The term “elect” indicates that they are chosen or selected by God. Some scholars believe that this could be a specific individual, possibly a prominent Christian woman or a leader in a local congregation. Others suggest that it represents a metaphorical reference to a particular church and its members.

Love in the Truth:The author expresses his love for the elect lady and her children in the truth. This phrase suggests that the love shared among believers should be rooted in the truth of the Gospel and in adherence to God’s Word. Genuine Christian love is characterised by truthfulness, sincerity, and a commitment to the teachings of Christ.

Communal Affirmation:The author affirms that his love for the elect lady and her children is shared by others who have also known the truth. This emphasises the importance of communal affirmation and unity within the body of believers. It suggests that the recipients of the letter are not alone in their faith but are part of a broader community of believers who stand together in the truth.

Overall, 2 John 1:1 encourages believers to love one another in truth and affirms the existence of a wider community of faith. It reminds us of the importance of genuine Christian love, grounded in the truth of the Gospel, and encourages believers to find strength and support in the fellowship of other believers.
