2 Kings 1:7

Posted on 5 May at 10:07

“And he said unto them, What manner of man was he which came up to meet you, and told you these words?”

This verse is part of a larger narrative found in the second book of Kings, which records the events surrounding the prophet Elijah and his interactions with King Ahaziah of Israel.

In this particular passage, Ahaziah had suffered a severe fall and was injured. Instead of seeking guidance from the Lord, he sent messengers to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, to determine if he would recover from his injuries. However, God sent Elijah to intercept the messengers and deliver a message to the king.

In verse 7, the messengers who were sent to consult with Baal-zebub encountered Elijah. Astonished by his appearance, they described him to the king, which prompted Ahaziah to inquire about the appearance of the man who had confronted his messengers.

This verse highlights Ahaziah’s ignorance concerning the identity of Elijah. By asking for a description of the man, he reveals his lack of knowledge and recognition of the prophet. This lack of spiritual discernment and reliance on pagan gods would prove to be detrimental to Ahaziah’s reign.

This passage reminds us of the importance of seeking guidance and wisdom from the Lord rather than turning to false gods or relying solely on human counsel. It also serves as a reminder that God’s messengers may appear unexpectedly in our lives, and it is crucial to discern and respond appropriately to their messages.

Furthermore, this verse invites us to reflect on our own attitudes towards the messengers of God. Do we recognize and respect those whom God sends to deliver His Word? Are we attentive to the messages God may be conveying to us through various means?

Overall:2 Kings 1:7 serves as a reminder to seek God’s counsel, discern the messengers He sends, and respond obediently to His Word.
