2 Kings 10:18

Posted on 18 May at 11:19

And Iehu gathered all the people together, and said vnto them, Ahab serued Baal a litle, but Iehu shall serue him much. 2 Kings 10:18 (KJV)

Context: 2 Kings 10:18 is part of the account of Jehu’s reign as king of Israel. Jehu was anointed by God as king and given the task of executing judgment on the house of Ahab, the wicked king who had led Israel into idolatry and disobedience to God. In obedience to God’s command, Jehu carried out a violent purge, killing not only Ahab’s descendants but also the prophets and followers of Baal.

Key Themes:

Zeal for God’s Commands – Jehu’s actions in this passage demonstrate his zeal for obeying God’s command to destroy the worship of Baal. Though Ahab “served Baal a little,” Jehu’s statement about serving Baal “much” was part of a strategic deception to gather Baal worshippers for destruction, not actual worship. This highlights the importance of zeal and obedience in following God’s commands and standing against idolatry.

God’s Judgment on Idolatry – Throughout the Old Testament, the people of Israel were frequently enticed to worship false gods, and Baal worship was one of the prominent forms of idolatry. God’s judgment on idolatry was severe, as it directly violated the first and second commandments. Jehu’s actions were part of God’s plan to bring judgment upon the house of Ahab and eradicate the worship of Baal, thus purifying the land of Israel.

Faithfulness to God’s Covenant – The worship of Baal was a direct violation of the covenant God had established with Israel. Jehu’s actions, though brutal, aimed to restore faithfulness to God’s covenant and bring the nation back to its proper worship of the one true God. This passage reminds us of the importance of upholding our covenant relationship with God and remaining faithful to His commands, even in the face of opposition.

The Sovereignty of God – Throughout the narrative, we see the sovereign hand of God at work. Jehu’s rise to power and his actions were part of God’s plan to bring judgment and restore righteousness in the land. God’s authority over human affairs is evident, and His purposes are ultimately fulfilled, even through the actions of imperfect individuals.
