2 Kings 10:24

Posted on 18 May at 11:19

And when they went in to offer sacrifices, and burnt offerings, Iehu appointed fourescore men without, and said, If any of the men whom I haue brought into your hands, escape, hee that letteth him goe, his life shall be for the life of him. 2 Kings 10:24 (KJV)

he that letteth him go, his life

shall be for the life of him. 2 Kings 10:24 (KJV)

Context: 2 Kings 10 records the account of Jehu’s rise to power as king of Israel and his subsequent actions to eliminate the worship of the false god Baal. Jehu was anointed by the prophet Elisha to carry out God’s judgment on the house of Ahab for their idolatry and wickedness.

Jehu’s strategy: In this verse Jehu gathers the worshipers of Baal together in one place, pretending to offer a great sacrifice to Baal. He then strategically stations eighty men outside, ready to ambush any of the worshippers who may try to escape. Jehu’s intention was to eliminate all those who were involved in the worship of Baal, thus fulfilling God’s command to wipe out the worship of false gods.

Jehu’s warning: Jehu issues a warning to the men stationed outside. He declares that if any of the worshippers escape and someone allows them to go free, that person’s life will be forfeited in exchange for the life of the one who escaped. This warning emphasizes the severity of the situation and the importance of carrying out God’s judgment without compromise or mercy.

Lessons to learn – Commitment to God: Jehu’s actions demonstrate his determination to fulfill God’s specific command regarding the elimination of Baal worship. However, 2 Kings 10:31 notes that he “did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam, which made Israel to sin,” indicating his commitment was not comprehensive to all of God’s laws. As believers we should be dedicated to following God wholeheartedly and upholding His truth, even in challenging circumstances.

God’s intolerance of idolatry: Throughout Scripture God consistently opposes idolatry, desiring exclusive worship and obedience from His people. The example of Jehu reminds us that God will not tolerate the worship of false gods and expects His followers to stand against all forms of idolatry.

Accountability: Jehu’s warning about holding the men accountable for allowing any worshippers to escape highlights the importance of personal responsibility. We should take our roles and commitments seriously, ensuring we fulfill them faithfully and do not compromise on God’s principles.

God’s justice: God’s justice is ultimately fulfilled in His perfect timing and ways. Jehu’s actions, while brutal and seemingly violent, were part of God’s plan to bring judgment upon the wickedness of Ahab’s house. We may not always understand or agree with the methods God uses, but we can trust in His sovereignty and righteousness.

In summary, 2 Kings 10:24 illustrates Jehu’s determined effort to eradicate the worship of Baal and uphold God’s commands. It reminds us of the importance of our commitment to God, His intolerance of idolatry, personal accountability, and trusting in God’s justice.
