2 Kings 11:15

Posted on 18 May at 11:40

“And Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of the hundreds, the officers of the host, and said unto them, Have her forth without the ranges: and him that followeth her kill with the sword. For the priest had said, Let her not be slain in the house of the LORD.”

This verse is part of the account of the coronation of Joash as the king of Judah, which took place during a time of political turmoil and ungodliness. Athaliah, the mother of Ahaziah, who was the previous king, had seized power and killed all of her own grandchildren to secure her position. However, Joash, who was an infant at the time, was hidden away by his aunt Jehosheba and the high priest Jehoiada.

In this verse, Jehoiada, the priest, gives instructions to the captains of the hundreds and the officers of the host regarding Athaliah. He commands them to bring Athaliah out from the temple area, without the ranges (presumably meaning without the protection of the temple guards), and anyone who follows her should be killed with the sword. However, Jehoiada adds that Athaliah herself should not be killed in the house of the Lord.

This verse demonstrates Jehoiada’s careful planning and strategic approach to removing Athaliah from power and restoring Joash to the throne. He takes measures to ensure that Athaliah’s followers are eliminated, but he wants to avoid shedding blood within the sacred confines of the temple.

From a broader perspective, this verse highlights the importance of God’s house and the need to maintain its sanctity. Jehoiada, as a priest, recognizes the significance of the temple and seeks to protect its purity by not allowing Athaliah’s execution within its walls.

Furthermore, this passage also illustrates the restoration of the rightful king, Joash, as a fulfillment of God’s promises. Despite the wickedness and chaos brought about by Athaliah’s reign, God’s plan was still at work through the actions of faithful individuals like Jehosheba and Jehoiada. Their efforts ensured the survival of the Davidic line and the continuation of God’s covenant promises.

In summary, 2 Kings 11:15 showcases Jehoiada’s careful instructions to eliminate Athaliah’s followers and restore Joash as king while preserving the sanctity of the temple. It serves as a reminder of the importance of God’s house and the fulfillment of His promises even in times of political turmoil and ungodliness.
