2 Kings 13:15

Posted on 18 May at 11:40

“And Elisha said unto him, Take bow and arrows. And he took unto him bow and arrows.”

Context:The verse is part of the account of the reign of Jehoash (also known as Joash), the king of Israel, and his interaction with the prophet Elisha. At this point in the narrative, Elisha is nearing the end of his life, and Jehoash comes to visit him seeking guidance and assistance against their enemies, the Syrians.

Seeking Instruction:Jehoash’s Initiative

In this verse, Jehoash takes the initiative to seek Elisha’s guidance and assistance. He recognises the need for God’s intervention and wisdom to overcome their adversaries. This reflects a willingness to humble himself before God’s appointed prophet and seek divine direction.

Application: Like Jehoash, we should cultivate a heart that seeks God’s guidance in our lives. Whether facing challenges or seeking direction, we can approach God with humility, acknowledging our dependence on Him.

  • Elisha’s Instruction:Symbolic Actions

Elisha responds to Jehoash’s request by instructing him to take a bow and arrows. In the following verses, Elisha instructs Jehoash to shoot arrows eastward, symbolising victory over the Syrians, and strike the ground with arrows, representing the number of victories he will have against their enemies.

Application: Elisha’s instructions reveal the importance of obedience and faith in God’s guidance. Just as Jehoash had to follow Elisha’s instructions precisely, we should also be attentive to God’s guidance through His Word, prayer, and the leading of the Holy Spirit.

  • Symbolism of the Bow and Arrows

The bow and arrows represent the instruments of warfare. In ancient times, they were crucial weapons in battle. The act of taking up the bow and arrows signifies the commitment and readiness to engage in the spiritual battle against the enemies of God’s people.

Application: As believers, we are called to engage in a spiritual battle against the forces of darkness (Ephesians 6:12). Taking up the “spiritual weapons” God has provided, such as prayer, the Word of God, faith, and the power of the Holy Spirit, is essential to stand firm and overcome the enemy.

  • Application of the Verse Today

Though this verse recounts an event from ancient history, it holds relevance for us today. We face various challenges, spiritual battles, and adversaries in our lives. Just as Jehoash sought Elisha’s guidance, we have the privilege of seeking God’s wisdom and help through prayer and the study of His Word. By taking up the “bow and arrows” of spiritual warfare, we can overcome the obstacles and experience victory in Christ.

Conclusion:

2 Kings 13:15 highlights the importance of seeking God’s guidance, obeying His instructions, and taking up the spiritual weapons He provides. By applying these principles in our lives, we can overcome challenges and adversaries, ultimately experiencing victory through our faith in Christ.
