2 Kings 13:21

Posted on 18 May at 11:40

“And it came to pass, as they were burying a man, that, behold, they spied a band of men; and they cast the man into the sepulchre of Elisha: and when the man was let down, and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet.”

Context:The book of 2 Kings records the history of the kings of Israel and Judah. In this particular chapter (2 Kings 13), the focus is on the reign of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, over Israel. The chapter highlights the struggles and victories of the Israelite kingdom against the oppression of Syria.

The Death of Elisha:Before delving into the specific verse, it’s important to understand the significance of Elisha. He was a prominent prophet in Israel who succeeded Elijah. Elisha performed numerous miracles and acts of God’s power during his ministry. In the preceding verses, the chapter describes the final days of Elisha’s life and his interactions with Jehoash, the king of Israel.

The Miraculous Revival:In 2 Kings 13:21, we encounter a remarkable incident that took place after the death of Elisha. As a group of men were burying another deceased individual, they noticed a band of raiders approaching. In their haste, they hastily placed the dead man’s body into the sepulcher (tomb) of Elisha. As soon as the dead man’s body touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, stood up, and was restored to life.

The Significance of the Miracle:This incident demonstrates the lingering spiritual power and anointing present in the life and ministry of Elisha, even after his death. God’s supernatural power was so evident in Elisha’s life that even his bones carried the ability to bring life to the dead. This miracle attests to the sovereignty and authority of God over life and death. It also serves as a reminder of the miracles God performed through Elisha during his ministry.

Symbolism and Lessons:This event foreshadows the resurrection power of Jesus Christ. Just as the touch of Elisha’s bones restored the dead man to life, Jesus, in His ministry, would bring about the resurrection of the dead, ultimately conquering death through His own resurrection. This miracle also reinforces the principle that God can work in extraordinary ways and use ordinary objects to bring about His purposes.

  • Application:While this particular miracle may seem extraordinary and unique, it serves as a reminder of God’s power and the significance of His anointing. As believers, we have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, which gives us access to the power and anointing of God. We should seek to live in a way that reflects God’s power and allows His Spirit to work through us to impact others and bring about transformation.

In conclusion, 2 Kings 13:21 portrays a remarkable event in which a dead man was revived when his body touched the bones of the prophet Elisha. This miracle points to God’s sovereignty, His authority over life and death, and the power of His anointing. It also foreshadows the resurrection power of Jesus Christ. As believers, we should strive to live in a way that reflects God’s power and allows His Spirit to work through us.
