2 Kings 13:4

Posted on 18 May at 11:40

“And Jehoahaz besought the Lord, and the Lord hearkened unto him: for he saw the oppression of Israel because the king of Syria oppressed them.”

Certainly!: Here’s a Bible study on 2 Kings 13:4 in the King James Version:

  • Context:The book of 2 Kings is a historical narrative that records the events of the divided kingdom of Israel and Judah. In this particular verse, the focus is on Jehoahaz, who was the king of Israel.
  • Jehoahaz’s plea to the Lord:Jehoahaz, recognising the oppression of Israel by the king of Syria, turned to the Lord in prayer. Despite the nation’s disobedience and idolatry, Jehoahaz sought God’s intervention and mercy.
  • God’s response:The verse states that the Lord hearkened to Jehoahaz’s plea. God, in His mercy, responded to Jehoahaz’s prayer and took note of the affliction and oppression faced by the people of Israel.
  • Lessons from the verse:
    • The power of prayer:Jehoahaz’s example reminds us of the importance of seeking God in times of trouble. Despite Israel’s overall spiritual decline, Jehoahaz’s plea for help demonstrates that God is willing to hear the cries of His people when they turn to Him sincerely.
    • God’s compassion and concern:Despite Israel’s waywardness, God still showed concern for His people. His response to Jehoahaz’s prayer displays His compassion and His willingness to intervene in the midst of their distress.
    • The consequences of disobedience:The verse implies that the oppression faced by Israel was a result of their disobedience to God’s commands. It serves as a reminder that disobedience has consequences and can lead to difficult circumstances in our lives.
  • Application:
    • Seek God in prayer:Like Jehoahaz, we should turn to God in prayer during times of trouble or oppression. We can bring our concerns, burdens, and requests before Him, knowing that He hears and responds to the cries of His people.
    • Recognise God’s compassion:Even in difficult times, we can find comfort in knowing that God is compassionate and cares about our struggles. His response to Jehoahaz’s prayer reminds us of His willingness to extend mercy and help to those who seek Him.
    • Learn from the consequences of disobedience:Israel’s oppression serves as a warning about the consequences of disobedience. As individuals, we should strive to live in obedience to God’s commands and seek His guidance in all aspects of our lives.
