2 Kings 15:10

Posted on 18 May at 11:40

“And Shallum the son of Jabesh conspired against him, and smote him before the people, and slew him, and reigned in his stead.”

Context:2 Kings 15:10 is part of the historical account of the kings of Israel. It refers to the reign of Zechariah, the son of Jeroboam II, who ruled over the northern kingdom of Israel.

Key Points:A Conspirator’s Rise to Power:In this verse, Shallum, the son of Jabesh, is depicted as a conspirator who rises against Zechariah. He kills Zechariah in public and takes the throne of Israel for himself. Political Instability and Divine Judgment:The assassination of Zechariah reflects the political instability and turmoil that plagued the kingdom of Israel during this period. This event was a fulfillment of the prophetic judgment pronounced upon the house of Jehu (2 Kings 10:30). God had warned that Jehu’s descendants would only hold the throne of Israel for four generations (2 Kings 10:30). Zechariah was the fourth and final generation, and with his death, the prophecy was fulfilled. Consequences of Sin:The overthrow of Zechariah and the rise of Shallum highlight the consequences of sin and the rebellion against God’s commandments. The corrupt leadership and idolatry prevalent in Israel led to political instability and violence. This incident serves as a reminder that God’s judgment will come upon those who deviate from His ways. The Sovereignty of God:Even in the midst of political upheaval and the sinful actions of individuals, God’s sovereignty is evident. The fulfillment of prophecy demonstrates that God’s word is sure and will come to pass. The rise and fall of kings and kingdoms are ultimately under God’s control, and He holds the ultimate authority.

Lessons:Faithfulness to God’s Commandments:The story of Zechariah’s assassination serves as a warning against the dangers of disobedience and unfaithfulness to God’s commandments. It emphasizes the importance of living in accordance with God’s will and avoiding the temptations of power, greed, and corruption. Consequences of Sin:This account reminds us that sin has consequences, not only for individuals but also for communities and nations. It is crucial to recognize the destructive nature of sin and its potential to harm others. Trusting in God’s Sovereignty:In times of political unrest or personal difficulties, it is essential to remember that God is ultimately in control. Despite the chaos and uncertainties of life, we can trust in His sovereignty and have confidence that His purposes will ultimately prevail.
