2 Kings 17:17

Listen to this article

“And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.”

Historical Context:The verse you mentioned is part of the historical account of the northern kingdom of Israel during the reign of various kings. Israel had turned away from following the commandments of the Lord and had embraced idolatry and pagan practices. As a result, God allowed them to be conquered by the Assyrians, who carried the people away into exile.

  • Idolatry and Pagan Practices:

The verse describes some of the sinful practices that the Israelites engaged in. “Causing their sons and daughters to pass through the fire” refers to the detestable practice of child sacrifice, which was common among the Canaanite nations but strictly forbidden by God. “Divination and enchantments” refer to the use of occult practices to seek guidance or power from other gods or spiritual forces, which was also condemned by God.

Selling Themselves to Evil:The verse indicates that the people of Israel willingly participated in these evil practices, effectively “selling themselves” to do evil in the sight of the Lord. This highlights their deliberate rebellion and departure from God’s commands. They provoked God to anger by abandoning their covenant relationship with Him and embracing the ways of the pagan nations around them.

God’s Response:Throughout the book of 2 Kings, we see how God warned the Israelites through prophets, calling them to repentance and obedience. However, the people persistently rejected God’s warnings and continued in their wickedness. As a result, God allowed the Assyrians to conquer them and scatter them among the nations.

  • The dangers of idolatry:The passage reminds us of the dangers of turning away from God and worshiping idols. Idolatry comes in various forms today, such as worshiping material possessions, fame, or power. We are called to worship the one true God and not allow anything or anyone to take His place in our lives.
  • The consequences of disobedience:The story of Israel serves as a warning to us about the consequences of persistent disobedience. God is patient and gracious, but there are limits to His patience. Continual rebellion against Him can lead to severe consequences.
  • The importance of repentance:The Israelites’ downfall could have been avoided if they had repented and turned back to God. It is never too late to turn to God in genuine repentance and seek His forgiveness. God is merciful and ready to restore those who humbly seek Him.

In conclusion, 2 Kings 17:17 highlights the Israelites’ descent into idolatry and pagan practices, which provoked God’s anger and led to their exile. It serves as a reminder for us to remain faithful to God, avoid idolatry, and seek His forgiveness through repentance.
