Untill the Lord remoued Israel out of his sight, as hee had said by all his seruants the Prophets: so was Israel caried away out of their owne land to Assyria, vnto this day. 2 Kings 17:23 (KJV)

2 Kings 17 recounts the downfall of the northern kingdom of Israel, which was conquered by the Assyrians. The chapter describes how the Israelites had abandoned the worship of the Lord and turned to idolatry, ultimately leading to their exile.

Spiritual Rebellion: The verse highlights the reason for Israel’s exile – their persistent spiritual rebellion against the Lord. Despite the warnings from various prophets sent by God, the Israelites continued to worship false gods and engage in sinful practices. Their disobedience resulted in the Lord’s removal of His divine protection and favour from them.

Fulfillment of Prophecy: The verse acknowledges that Israel’s exile was not a surprise but a fulfilment of the prophecies proclaimed by the servants of God. Throughout the history of Israel, God had warned His people through prophets about the consequences of their disobedience. The fulfilment of these prophecies demonstrated God’s faithfulness to His word.

Exile to Assyria: The verse affirms that Israel was carried away from their land to Assyria. The Assyrians, under the leadership of Tiglath‑Pileser III and later Shalmaneser V, conquered the northern kingdom of Israel in 722 BCE. The Israelites were forcibly relocated to various regions within the Assyrian Empire, thereby ending their existence as an independent nation.

Duration of Exile: The passage notes that the exile of Israel continued “unto this day” when the author was writing. It implies that at the time of writing, Israel remained in captivity, and the northern kingdom had not been restored. The mention of this ongoing exile serves as a reminder of the consequences of unfaithfulness and disobedience.
