And Hezekiah gaue him all the siluer that was found in the house of the Lord, and in the treasures of the kings house. 2 Kings 18:15 (KJV)

Context: 2 Kings 18:15 is part of the historical account of King Hezekiah of Judah during the divided‑kingdom period of Israel’s history. Hezekiah was a righteous king who reigned in Judah for twenty‑nine years. This verse occurs at a time when the Assyrian king Sennacherib invaded Judah and threatened Jerusalem.

Hezekiah’s Dilemma: In the preceding verses the Assyrian king sent his commander, the Rabshakeh, to intimidate and demoralize the people of Judah. The Rabshakeh boasted of Assyria’s power, belittled Hezekiah’s trust in God, and urged the people to surrender. Confronted with this formidable threat, Hezekiah sought a solution to save Jerusalem and its inhabitants.

Giving the Silver: In response to the Assyrian invasion Hezekiah made the decision to give Sennacherib all the silver that was found in the house of the LORD and in the treasures of the king’s house. This action was an attempt to appease the Assyrian king, to buy time, and to show his submission to Assyria.

Symbolic Significance: The silver mentioned here represents the valuable resources and wealth of the temple and the royal palace. It is a tangible expression of the riches of Judah. By giving away the silver, Hezekiah demonstrated the desperate measures he was willing to take to protect his people and preserve the city of Jerusalem.

Trusting in Man vs. Trusting in God: While the decision to give away the silver might seem practical from a human standpoint, it raises important theological questions. Hezekiah’s actions can be seen as an instance of relying on worldly solutions rather than trusting in God’s intervention. Scripture repeatedly warns that placing trust in human strategies, alliances, or wealth can lead to disappointment and hinder our relationship with God.

Overall, 2 Kings 18:15 highlights the difficult choices faced by Hezekiah as a leader and the potential spiritual implications of his decision. It serves as a reminder for believers to seek God’s wisdom, to trust Him wholeheartedly, and to prioritize His will in all circumstances.
