2 Kings 18:35

Who are they among all the gods of the countreys, that haue deliuered their countrey out of mine hand, that the Lord should deliuer Ierusalem out of mine hand? 2 Kings 18:35 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the historical account of the Assyrian invasion of Judah during King Hezekiah’s reign. The Assyrian king Sennacherib sent his commander to Jerusalem with a message that challenged the people’s trust in God. By asking, “Who are they among all the gods of the countries that have delivered their country out of my hand?” the commander mocked the power of Israel’s God, implying that no other deity had been able to save a nation from Assyrian conquest.

Trust in God’s Deliverance

The question is a direct challenge to the faith of the Judeans. It urges believers to examine whether they truly rely on God’s ability to rescue them when faced with overwhelming opposition. In our own lives, difficulties can seem insurmountable, yet the verse reminds us that God is greater than any problem or adversary.

The Sovereignty and Power of God

The commander’s words highlight that, unlike human rulers, God’s power is unparalleled. No other god had succeeded in delivering a nation from the Assyrian hand, underscoring that God alone possesses the authority to save His people even when circumstances appear hopeless.

The Faithfulness of God

Scripture repeatedly records God’s faithfulness to His covenant people. Despite the looming threat, God remained committed to protecting Jerusalem. This verse calls us to trust in that steadfastness, especially when circumstances look dire.

Contrast Between Human and Divine Power

The Assyrian king’s conquests demonstrate human strength, but they also reveal its limits. Human power cannot ultimately stand against the Almighty. Recognizing this contrast helps believers place confidence in divine rather than earthly authority.

Application

Reflect on your own reliance on God. When challenges arise, remember that God’s sovereignty and faithfulness surpass any earthly force. Seek to deepen your faith, trusting that He is always present and capable of delivering you from every situation.
