2 Kings 19:1

Posted on 18 May at 11:40

“And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD.”

Historical Context:During the reign of King Hezekiah, the Assyrian Empire, under the leadership of King Sennacherib, had already conquered and deported the northern kingdom of Israel. Now, the Assyrian army threatened to invade and conquer the southern kingdom of Judah, which included Jerusalem, the capital city.

Upon hearing the threats and insults from the Assyrian messengers, King Hezekiah’s immediate reaction was to tear his clothes and put on sackcloth, a coarse material associated with mourning and repentance. This was a visible sign of his distress and sorrow. He then went into the house of the LORD (the temple) seeking guidance, comfort, and help from God.

  • Seeking God in Times of Trouble:King Hezekiah’s first response in the face of a crisis was to turn to God. Instead of relying solely on his own strength or seeking solutions from other sources, he sought the presence of God. This teaches us the importance of seeking God in times of trouble, trusting in His guidance, and finding solace in His presence.
  • Demonstrating Humility:Tearing his clothes and wearing sackcloth were symbolic acts of humility, acknowledging his dependence on God and his need for divine intervention. This demonstrates the importance of approaching God with a humble heart, recognizing our limitations, and surrendering our circumstances to Him.
  • Trusting God’s Sovereignty:King Hezekiah’s actions reflected his trust in God’s sovereignty and power. He sought refuge in the temple, acknowledging that the LORD was the ultimate authority and the only one who could deliver Judah from the Assyrian threat. This encourages us to place our trust in God, recognizing that He has control over all situations and is able to intervene on our behalf.
  • Expressing Grief and Seeking Comfort:King Hezekiah’s tearing of clothes and wearing sackcloth expressed his grief over the impending danger faced by his people. It also showed his desire for God’s comfort and deliverance. This reminds us that it is appropriate to express our emotions to God honestly, seeking His comfort and guidance during times of distress.
