2 Kings 2:10

Posted on 18 May at 11:41

“And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so.”

Certainly! Here’s a Bible study on 2 Kings 2:10 (KJV)

  • 2 Kings 2:10 (KJV)

Context:The verse is part of the account of the prophet Elijah’s departure from the earth and the passing of his prophetic mantle to his successor, Elisha. Prior to this verse, Elijah had asked Elisha what he could do for him before he was taken away. Elisha requested a double portion of Elijah’s spirit.

Persistence in Faith:Elisha’s request for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit demonstrates his desire for a greater measure of God’s power and presence in his life. He desired to continue the work of God and carry the prophetic anointing Elijah possessed. Elisha’s persistence in his faith and his bold request reveal his strong commitment to serve the Lord faithfully.

The Challenge:Elijah’s response to Elisha’s request is “Thou hast asked a hard thing.” Elijah acknowledged that what Elisha asked was not an easy request. It required not only God’s approval but also Elisha’s faithfulness and spiritual readiness to handle the responsibility that came with the double portion.

Condition of Receiving:Elijah sets a condition for Elisha to receive the double portion: “if thou see me when I am taken from thee.” Elisha had to be present and witness Elijah’s departure to receive what he asked for. This condition served as a test of Elisha’s perseverance, faith, and attentiveness. It required Elisha to be fully focused and attentive to Elijah’s departure.

The Significance of Witnessing:Witnessing the departure of Elijah was not just a matter of physical sight but of spiritual discernment. Elisha had to recognize the significance of the moment and perceive God’s hand at work. By witnessing Elijah’s departure, Elisha would receive confirmation that his request had been granted.

Application:This verse encourages us to have persistence in our faith and to make bold requests of God. However, it also reminds us that our requests must align with God’s will, and we must be spiritually prepared to handle the responsibility that comes with our petitions. Furthermore, it emphasizes the importance of attentiveness and discernment in recognizing God’s work in our lives.

In conclusion, 2 Kings 2:10 teaches us about persistence in faith, the challenges of our requests, and the conditions for receiving from God. It reminds us to be spiritually attentive and discerning, seeking God’s will in our lives and being prepared for the responsibilities that come with our petitions.
