And when the sons of the prophets which were to view at Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.

Context

Elijah had just been taken up to heaven in a whirlwind, and Elisha had asked for a double portion of his spirit. As Elisha returned from witnessing that departure, the sons of the prophets at Jericho saw him and recognized that God’s power now rested on him.

Meaning

The “sons of the prophets” were a community of disciples who learned under prophets like Elijah and Elisha. Their words, “The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha,” were more than a compliment. They declared that the same Spirit who had empowered Elijah now empowered Elisha to carry on the prophetic ministry. This was a public confirmation of Elisha’s new role.

Their response included both speech and action. They came to meet Elisha and bowed to the ground before him. In that culture, bowing was a sign of deep respect and submission. By doing this, they accepted Elisha as their leader and showed their willingness to follow him.

This event connects with the earlier request in 2 Kings 2:9, where Elisha asked for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit. The recognition at Jericho shows that God answered that request.
