2 Kings 2:2

Posted on 18 May at 11:19

And Elijah said vnto Elisha, Tarie here, I pray thee: for the Lord hath sent me to Bethel: and Elisha said vnto him, As the Lord liueth, and as thy soule liueth, I wil not leaue thee. So they went downe to Bethel. 2 Kings 2:2 (KJV)

The passage forms part of the narrative in which Elijah prepares to pass his prophetic mantle to Elisha, occurring just before Elijah is taken up into heaven in a whirlwind (2 Kings 2:11). Elijah and Elisha were traveling from Gilgal toward Bethel, and Elijah repeatedly urged Elisha to remain behind while he went to Bethel.

Elijah was a leading prophet in Israel, and Elisha had been chosen as his successor. Their relationship was marked by deep respect and loyalty, and Elisha had faithfully served and learned from Elijah. This bond is evident in Elisha’s unwavering response to Elijah’s request.

Each time Elijah asked Elisha to stay in Gilgal, Elisha answered with a solemn oath, swearing by the living God that he would not leave Elijah’s side. His determination demonstrated a strong desire to continue serving and learning from his mentor.

Elisha recognized the significance of staying in the presence of a prophet of God. By remaining close to Elijah, he positioned himself to receive spiritual growth and instruction. The passage therefore highlights the importance of godly mentors and the benefits of discipleship in the believer’s life.

Elijah explained that the Lord had sent him to Bethel, and Elisha trusted that direction. His willingness to follow God’s leading reflects faith in divine guidance and a readiness to obey even when it requires stepping out of one’s comfort zone.

The text encourages believers to seek out godly mentors who can guide their spiritual journey, to value companionship and discipleship, and to trust in God’s guidance. It calls us to remain committed to our spiritual path and to obey God’s leading, just as Elisha did.

Overall, 2 Kings 2:2 presents a powerful example of loyalty, determination, and the value of spiritual mentorship. It challenges each of us to find trustworthy mentors, stay devoted to our walk with God, and rely on His direction for our lives.
