2 Kings 20:15
“And he said, What have they seen in thine house? And Hezekiah answered, All the things that are in mine house have they seen: there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shewed them.”
Context:This verse is part of the narrative of King Hezekiah’s life and his encounter with the Babylonian envoys. In the previous verses, Hezekiah showed these envoys all the treasures and riches of his kingdom.
The background:During Hezekiah’s reign, he became seriously ill and was told by the prophet Isaiah that he would die. However, upon Hezekiah’s fervent prayer and appeal to God, the Lord granted him an additional 15 years of life. To confirm this promise, Isaiah performed a sign involving the shadow on the sundial moving backward (2 Kings 20:1-11).
The encounter with the Babylonian envoys:After his recovery, Hezekiah received envoys from Babylon, likely sent to congratulate him on his restoration to health. Hezekiah took the opportunity to show off his wealth, including all the treasures in his house.
Hezekiah’s response:When Isaiah questioned Hezekiah about the envoys and what he had shown them, Hezekiah candidly confessed that he had displayed everything, holding nothing back. This response indicates a lack of discernment and wisdom on Hezekiah’s part, as it revealed his vulnerability and laid bare the nation’s riches before a potential future enemy.
- Pride and vulnerability:Hezekiah’s eagerness to show off his wealth and possessions to the Babylonian envoys reflects a prideful attitude. This incident highlights the danger of pride and the vulnerability it creates, as it can attract unwanted attention and potential threats.
- Seeking God’s guidance:Hezekiah missed an opportunity to seek God’s guidance and wisdom before making a decision. Instead, he acted impulsively, and his lack of discernment had negative consequences. It serves as a reminder for us to seek God’s guidance and wisdom in all our actions.
- Trusting in earthly treasures:Hezekiah’s focus on displaying his treasures reveals a misplaced trust in worldly possessions. As believers, we are reminded to prioritize spiritual treasures and place our trust in God rather than material wealth.
- Consequences of our actions:Hezekiah’s lack of discretion resulted in dire consequences. In response to his actions, Isaiah prophesied that the Babylonians would eventually invade Jerusalem and carry off all the treasures Hezekiah had shown them (2 Kings 20:16-18). This incident serves as a reminder that our actions have consequences, and we must exercise wisdom and discernment in all we do.
