2 Kings 21:11

Listen to this article

“Because Manasseh king of Judah hath done these abominations, and hath done wickedly above all that the Amorites did, which were before him, and hath made Judah also to sin with his idols.”

Context:2 Kings 21 describes the reign of Manasseh, the son of Hezekiah, who became king of Judah at the age of 12 and ruled for 55 years. Unfortunately, Manasseh did evil in the sight of the Lord, leading the people of Judah astray with his idolatry and wickedness.

The Sinful Actions of Manasseh:The verse begins by emphasising the abominable actions of Manasseh. It states that he not only committed abominations but also surpassed the wickedness of the Amorites who lived before him. Manasseh’s actions included promoting idol worship, building altars for false gods, and even sacrificing his own children to pagan deities (2 Kings 21:2-6).

The Influence of Manasseh:The verse also highlights that Manasseh’s actions had a profound effect on the nation of Judah. He caused the people of Judah to sin with him and follow after false gods. As the king, his influence was significant, and he led the entire nation astray from the worship of the true God.

Consequences of Manasseh’s Sin:Manasseh’s wickedness and idolatry had severe consequences for the kingdom of Judah. God, in response to the nation’s disobedience, pronounced judgment upon Judah, declaring that He would bring calamity upon them, removing His protection and forsaking Jerusalem (2 Kings 21:12-15).

God’s Longsuffering and Mercy:Despite Manasseh’s evil actions, it is important to note that God is patient and merciful. The next verses (2 Kings 21:16-17) indicate that Manasseh repented and sought the Lord’s favour during his later years. God showed compassion and allowed Manasseh to return to Jerusalem, although the consequences of his earlier actions could not be fully reversed.

Lessons to Learn:

  • The Danger of Idolatry: Manasseh’s story serves as a warning against the lure of idolatry. Idol worship involves giving devotion and allegiance to anything other than the one true God. It leads to spiritual downfall and has devastating consequences for individuals and nations.
  • The Influence of Leaders: Manasseh’s actions highlight the significant impact leaders can have on those they lead. Whether in families, communities, or nations, leaders should strive to set a godly example and lead people towards righteousness.
  • God’s Mercy and Forgiveness: Manasseh’s story also reveals God’s willingness to forgive and show mercy when genuine repentance is demonstrated. No matter how far we may have strayed, God’s love and grace are always available to those who turn back to Him in humility.

In conclusion, 2 Kings 21:11 recounts the abominations committed by Manasseh and the impact of his actions on the nation of Judah. It serves as a reminder of the dangers of idolatry and the significance of leadership. It also demonstrates God’s mercy and forgiveness, encouraging us to seek His forgiveness and turn back to Him in repentance.
