2 Kings 22:1 (KJV)
Context
The book of 2 Kings continues the historical account of the Israelite kings from 1 Kings, covering the period of the divided kingdom and focusing on the kingdom of Judah. This verse introduces King Josiah, who is known for his reforms and faithfulness to God.
Meaning
Josiah was only eight years old when he became king, an unusually young age to ascend to the throne. Yet he reigned for thirty-one years in Jerusalem, indicating a lengthy and impactful rule. The verse also names his mother, Jedidah, the daughter of Adaiah of Boscath (also spelled Bozkath), a city in the tribe of Judah. This mention highlights the importance of family background in the royal records.
Josiah became king around 640 BC, during a period of spiritual decline in Judah. His father, Amon, and grandfather, Manasseh, were both wicked kings who had led the nation astray by promoting idolatry and abandoning the worship of the Lord. Amon lived only twenty-four years (2 Kings 21:19), meaning Josiah was born when his father was about sixteen years old. Despite this heritage, Josiah chose a different path and sought to restore the worship of God.
Biblical connections
Later in the chapter (2 Kings 22:8-13), we learn that during the eighteenth year of Josiah’s reign, the Book of the Law was discovered in the temple. This discovery had a profound impact on Josiah, leading him to institute various reforms and renew the covenant between God and the people.
Application
Josiah’s example teaches us the importance of seeking after God and His Word even in challenging times. It also reminds us that age or circumstances should not hinder our commitment to righteousness and obedience to God. Josiah’s determination to follow God’s ways, despite the prevailing spiritual decline, serves as an inspiration for us to remain faithful and pursue God’s will in our lives.
