Posted on 18 May at 11:18

Iehoiakim was twentie and fiue yeere olde when he began to reigne, and he reigned eleuen yeeres in Ierusalem: and his mothers name was Zebudah, the daughter of Pedaiah of Rumah. 2 Kings 23:36 (KJV)

Jehoiakim

was twenty and five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Zebudah, the daughter of Pedaiah of Rumah. 2 Kings 23:36 (KJV)

Jehoiakim was twenty‑five years old when he began to reign, and he ruled over Judah for eleven years in Jerusalem. His mother, Zebudah, the daughter of Pedaiah of Rumah, is named in the verse, establishing his family background and lineage. The brief historical note introduces a king who ascended the throne at a relatively young age, providing a timeframe for assessing his impact on the nation.

The period of Jehoiakim’s reign was marked by significant spiritual decline and disobedience to God’s commands. The biblical account records that under his rule idolatry, injustice, and oppression became prevalent. These sins contributed directly to the eventual downfall and exile of Judah, illustrating the far‑reaching consequences when a leader strays from divine principles.

Studying this verse within the broader context of 2 Kings helps to appreciate how personal choices of a ruler can shape the destiny of an entire nation. The details of age, length of reign, and maternal lineage are not merely biographical; they set the stage for understanding the challenges faced by Judah during a turbulent era. The narrative serves as a reminder that leadership carries profound responsibility, and faithfulness to God’s ways is essential for the well‑being of the people.

Thus, this introductory verse functions as a gateway to the historical and spiritual themes that unfold in the chapter, emphasizing the importance of righteous governance, the dangers of idolatry, and the lasting impact of a king’s decisions on the fate of his nation.
