2 Kings 23:6

Posted on 18 May at 11:41

“And he brought out the grove from the house of the LORD, without Jerusalem, unto the brook Kidron, and burned it at the brook Kidron, and stamped it small to powder, and cast the powder thereof upon the graves of the children of the people.”

Historical Context:This verse is part of the account of King Josiah’s reforms in the kingdom of Judah. King Josiah reigned from approximately 640-609 BC. He was known as one of the righteous kings who sought to bring the people of Judah back to the worship of the true God and rid the land of idolatry.

  • The Grove:

The verse mentions “the grove” or “Asherah pole.” The grove was a wooden symbol associated with the worship of the Canaanite goddess Asherah. It was often placed near altars and shrines dedicated to false gods. The presence of the grove in the house of the Lord was an abomination and a violation of God’s commandments.

The Act of Removal:King Josiah took decisive action by removing the grove from the house of the Lord. He brought it out of Jerusalem to the brook Kidron, which was a valley on the eastern side of Jerusalem. The Kidron Valley was associated with rituals of cleansing and purification.

Destruction of the Grove:Josiah not only removed the grove but also burned it at the brook Kidron. The act of burning it symbolized the complete destruction and annihilation of the false worship associated with the grove. He also stamped it small to powder, ensuring that it could not be reconstructed. The ashes were then scattered upon the graves of the children of the people, signifying the utter desecration of the false religious practices associated with the grove.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • King Josiah’s actions demonstrate his commitment to obeying God’s commandments and his zeal for purging the land of idolatry. It serves as a reminder of the importance of wholehearted devotion to God and the need to remove anything that hinders our worship of Him.
  • The destruction of the grove and the scattering of its ashes represent the decisive and thorough eradication of idolatrous practices. It teaches us the significance of dealing with sin and temptation in our lives, not merely suppressing them but completely rooting them out.
  • The location of the burning at the Kidron Valley reminds us of the importance of spiritual purification. Just as the ashes were cast into a place associated with cleansing, we need to seek God’s forgiveness and purification for our sins, allowing Him to cleanse us completely.

In conclusion, 2 Kings 23:6 records King Josiah’s bold actions to remove and destroy the grove, a symbol of idolatry, from the house of the Lord. It serves as a powerful reminder of the need for wholehearted devotion to God, the eradication of sin in our lives, and the importance of spiritual purification.
