Nowe the rest of the actes of Iehoiakim, and all that he did, are they not written in the booke of the Chronicles of the Kings of Iudah? 2 Kings 24:5 (KJV)

Historical Context: Jehoiakim was the son of King Josiah and reigned as the king of Judah for eleven years. This verse refers to the summary of his reign and directs the reader to consult the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah for more details.

Importance of Recording History: The mention of the book of the chronicles highlights the importance of recording historical events. Throughout the Bible we find various references to the books of chronicles that documented the deeds and reigns of the kings. These records served as a valuable resource for future generations to learn from the successes and failures of their predecessors.

Accountability and Judgment: The verse indicates that Jehoiakim’s actions were recorded and preserved, implying that leaders are accountable for their actions before God. It reminds us that nothing escapes God’s notice, and He keeps a record of our lives. This underscores the broader biblical theme of accountability before God and points to a day of judgment when everyone will have to give an account for their deeds.

Seeking Wisdom from the Past: Referring to the chronicles encourages us to study history and learn from the mistakes and triumphs of those who came before us. The Bible itself serves as a historical account of God’s dealings with humanity, providing wisdom and guidance for our lives. By studying both biblical and secular history we can gain insights into human nature, the consequences of choices, and the faithfulness of God.

Application to Our Lives: The verse prompts us to consider our own actions and the legacy we are leaving behind. Just as Jehoiakim’s deeds were recorded, our choices and conduct matter. We should strive to live in a way that honours God and leaves a positive impact on others. It also encourages us to keep a personal record of our spiritual journey, reflecting on our growth, God’s faithfulness, and the lessons we have learned.

Overall, 2 Kings 24:5 reminds us of the importance of recording history, being accountable for our actions, seeking wisdom from the past, and living in a way that leaves a positive legacy. It emphasises the enduring significance of our choices and the faithfulness of God in preserving our stories.
