2 Kings 3:3
“Nevertheless, he cleaved unto the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom.”
Context: The verse is part of the account of the reign of Jehoram (Joram), the son of Ahab, who became the king of Israel after his father’s death.
This verse highlights a key aspect of Jehoram’s character and actions.
The Sins of Jeroboam: The verse mentions that Jehoram “cleaved unto the sins of Jeroboam.” Jeroboam, the first king of the northern kingdom of Israel, had set up golden calves in Bethel and Dan as objects of worship, leading the people of Israel into idolatry. This act violated God’s commandment against creating graven images and worshiping them (Exodus 20:4‑5). Jehoram continued this sinful practice and did not turn away from it.
Jehoram’s Failure: Despite being the king of God’s chosen people, Jehoram did not learn from the mistakes of his predecessors. He followed the sinful ways of Jeroboam, rather than seeking God and obeying His commandments. This failure to break away from idolatry and the sins of the past had severe consequences for Jehoram and the nation of Israel.
