2 Kings 4:25
So she went, and came vnto the man of God to mount Carmel: and it came to passe when the man of God saw her afarre off, that hee said to Gehazi his seruant, Behold, yonder is that Shunammite: 2 Kings 4:25 (KJV)
In this verse we encounter the Shunammite woman, a figure who had previously shown generous hospitality to the prophet Elisha. Earlier in the narrative (2 Kings 4:8‑10) she provided a room for the man of God whenever he passed through her town, establishing a relationship of mutual respect and care.
When her son suddenly died, the woman did not succumb to despair. Instead, she acted promptly, traveling to seek Elisha’s help. Her decisive response demonstrates a faith that trusts in God’s chosen servant and a willingness to pursue divine intervention rather than remain passive.
The verse itself mentions that she went to “mount Carmel,” yet the broader biblical context indicates that Elisha was residing in Shunem at that time. Scholars note that Mount Carmel is more closely associated with Elijah’s confrontation with the prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18). Therefore, the reference to Mount Carmel appears to be a textual inaccuracy; the woman’s journey was to the place where Elisha was actually staying, most likely Shunem.
When Elisha saw the woman approaching from a distance, he recognized her immediately and called out to his servant Gehazi, “Behold, yonder is that Shunammite.” This moment reveals the prophet’s spiritual discernment and the lasting impression the woman had made on him through her earlier acts of kindness.
The passage underscores the importance of cultivating relationships grounded in generosity. The Shunammite’s hospitality opened the door for God’s blessings, illustrating how acts of kindness toward God’s servants can position us to receive divine favor.
God’s faithfulness is further displayed in the subsequent verses (2 Kings 4:32‑37), where Elisha restores the dead child to life. The woman’s trust, combined with her relationship with the prophet, results in a miraculous restoration, teaching that God can provide solutions to seemingly hopeless situations.
Application: The story encourages believers to act in faith, seek the presence of God’s anointed servants when crises arise, and invest in relationships marked by kindness and generosity. It reminds us that God is faithful and capable of extraordinary blessings when we approach Him with humility and trust.
