2 Kings 4:37

Posted on 18 May at 11:19

Then she went in, and fell at his feet, and bowed her selfe to the ground, and tooke vp her sonne, and went out. 2 Kings 4:37 (KJV)

This verse is part of the larger narrative in 2 Kings 4:8‑37 that tells of the Shunammite woman and the miraculous restoration of her son’s life through the prophet Elisha. The woman was a notable figure who showed great hospitality and respect to Elisha, the prophet of God. In gratitude, Elisha wanted to bless her and, learning that she had no child, prophesied that she would have a son in due time. God fulfilled that prophecy, and she conceived and bore a son.

When the child was older he suddenly became ill and died in his mother’s arms. Distraught, the Shunammite woman immediately took action. She went to the room where Elisha was staying, and in an act of humility and desperation she fell at Elisha’s feet, bowing to the ground, then took up her son and went out. This gesture expressed her deep reverence and faith in Elisha as a prophet of God, seeking his help and intercession.

After the woman pleaded with Elisha, he rose and followed her to her home. Upon reaching the house, Elisha entered the room where the child’s lifeless body lay and prayed to God for his restoration. God heard Elisha’s prayer, and the child was miraculously brought back to life, revived and returned to his mother.

Key themes emerge from this account.

The woman’s actions exemplify faith and humility; despite the tragic loss of her son she did not lose hope but turned to God’s appointed prophet, Elisha, for help. Her act of falling at his feet and bowing herself to the ground demonstrates her trust in God’s power working through the prophet. The story also highlights God’s sovereign power, showing that He can intervene in human affairs and that the restoration of the son reveals God’s power over life and death, with Elisha serving as God’s chosen vessel. God’s compassion is evident as He hears the woman’s cries and responds to her distress, showing that He is not distant but deeply cares for His people in their times of need. Finally, the fulfillment of Elisha’s prophecy concerning the birth of the son and the subsequent miraculous restoration underscores God’s faithfulness in keeping His promises, reminding us that He can bring life and restoration even in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges.

Application for today follows naturally.

We are to trust in God’s appointed vessels, just as the woman turned to Elisha, recognizing that spiritual leaders and mentors can intercede for us and offer guidance during challenging times. We should persevere in faith, holding onto our trust and approaching God with humility, confident that He can bring restoration and healing. Recognizing God’s compassion allows us to take comfort in knowing He sees our pain and is ready to extend love and mercy toward us. Finally, we can rest in God’s faithfulness, assured that He remains steadfast to His promises and will bring life and restoration to our circumstances.
