And it came to passe, when the vessels were full, that shee said vnto her sonne, Bring me yet a vessell. And hee said vnto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oyle stayed. 2 Kings 4:6 (KJV)

2 Kings 4:6 is situated within the larger context of Elisha’s ministry. Elisha succeeded the prophet Elijah and performed numerous miracles by God’s power. In this particular account, Elisha is interacting with a widow whose husband, one of the sons of the prophets, had died, leaving her in a difficult financial situation.

In the preceding verses (2 Kings 4:1-5), Elisha had instructed the widow to gather empty vessels and pour the small amount of oil she had left into them. As she began pouring, the oil miraculously multiplied, filling all the vessels she had collected. When there were no more vessels, the oil stopped flowing.

This verse highlights the widow’s faith and obedience. Despite her dire circumstances and the seeming impossibility of the situation, she followed Elisha’s instructions. She collected empty vessels, demonstrating her faith in God’s ability to provide for her needs through the prophet. Her act of obedience was crucial in the manifestation of the miracle.

The multiplication of the oil showcases God’s provision and abundance. The small amount of oil the widow possessed was multiplied beyond measure, meeting her immediate need and providing her with enough resources to pay off her debts. It serves as a reminder that God is not limited by human circumstances or resources. He can provide abundantly beyond our expectations.

The widow’s story teaches us the importance of trusting in God’s instructions and being obedient even when faced with challenging circumstances. God can work miracles through our faith and obedience. This account reminds us that God is the ultimate provider and can meet our needs, even in the midst of scarcity or impossibility. The widow’s act of collecting empty vessels demonstrates the importance of being resourceful and using what we have to seek God’s provision. It encourages us to be diligent and proactive in seeking solutions, knowing that God can multiply what we offer. Her reliance on Elisha’s guidance symbolizes our need to depend on God’s wisdom and direction in our lives. Just as she sought Elisha’s help, we should seek God’s guidance in every aspect of our lives.
