2 Kings 5:13

Posted on 18 May at 11:41

“And his servants came near, and spake unto him, and said, My father, if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, wouldest thou not have done it? how much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, and be clean?”

This verse is a part of the account of Naaman, a commander of the Syrian army, who was suffering from leprosy. At the advice of a young Israelite girl, Naaman sought healing from the prophet Elisha in Israel. When Naaman arrived at Elisha’s house, the prophet sent a messenger to instruct Naaman to wash in the Jordan River seven times to be cleansed of his leprosy.

Let’s explore the key lessons we can draw from this verse:

Humility and Obedience:Naaman initially expected a grand and elaborate healing ceremony, as befitting his status as a commander. However, his servants wisely reminded him of the importance of humility and obedience. They questioned whether he would not have done some great thing if asked by the prophet, highlighting the significance of following even seemingly simple instructions from God’s appointed messenger.

The Simplicity of God’s Commands:Naaman’s pride almost hindered him from receiving his healing. His servants reminded him that if Elisha had commanded him to perform a great and difficult task, he would have readily complied. The contrast between a grand gesture and a simple act of washing illustrated the straightforwardness of God’s instructions. It emphasizes that obedience to God’s commands, no matter how small or simple they may seem, is crucial for experiencing His blessings.

Faith and Trust in God’s Plan:Naaman had to choose between his preconceived expectations and the faith to trust in God’s plan. By washing in the Jordan River as commanded, he exhibited faith in God’s ability to heal him. Naaman’s complete healing came as a result of his obedience and trust in God’s appointed means.

Overall, 2 Kings 5:13 teaches us about the importance of humility, obedience, and faith in God’s instructions and plans. It reminds us to trust in God’s wisdom, even when His commands seem simple or different from what we expect. Just as Naaman was healed through his obedience and trust, we too can experience God’s blessings and miracles when we faithfully follow His guidance in our lives.
