2 Kings 6:15

Listen to this article

“And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do?”

Context:Before diving into the specific verse, it’s important to understand the context. In 2 Kings 6, the prophet Elisha is in Dothan, and the king of Syria sends a great army to capture him because Elisha’s prophetic revelations were exposing the king’s military strategies to the king of Israel. This sets the stage for the events described in verse 15.

The servant’s perspective:In this verse, the servant of Elisha wakes up early and sees that the city is surrounded by a hostile army with horses and chariots. The servant becomes fearful and cries out, expressing his concern about their dire situation. This response reveals the servant’s lack of faith and his focus on the overwhelming circumstances.

Trusting in God’s provision:Elisha’s servant’s reaction reflects a common human tendency to be consumed by fear and anxiety in the face of adversity. However, the story goes on to demonstrate God’s faithfulness and provision. Elisha responds to his servant’s distress in the following verses by praying for his eyes to be opened. Once the servant’s eyes are opened, he sees that the mountain is full of horses and chariots of fire, representing the heavenly armies sent by God to protect them. This reveals the supernatural power and protection of God in the midst of seemingly impossible situations.

Application:This verse teaches us the importance of maintaining faith and trust in God, even when circumstances seem overwhelming. Like Elisha’s servant, we may often find ourselves surrounded by challenges, obstacles, or even enemies. However, we should remember that God is always with us and is capable of intervening on our behalf. Instead of being consumed by fear, we should turn to God in prayer, seeking His guidance, protection, and deliverance.

  • Overcoming fear and developing faith:Elisha’s servant initially saw the enemy’s army as an insurmountable threat. However, through the intervention of God, he gained a new perspective and witnessed God’s mighty power. In our lives, when we encounter challenges that seem impossible to overcome, we should seek a deeper understanding of God’s character, trust in His promises, and believe that He is able to turn the situation around for our good.

In conclusion, 2 Kings 6:15 teaches us about the importance of maintaining faith and trust in God, even in the face of overwhelming circumstances. It reminds us that God is always with us and is capable of intervening on our behalf. By seeking God’s guidance, protection, and deliverance, we can overcome fear and develop a strong faith in His power.
