2 Kings 6:17

Listen to this article

“And Elisha prayed, and said, Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.”

This verse captures a significant event in the life of the prophet Elisha. Here’s a breakdown of the context and key points to consider:

Background:The passage takes place during a time when Israel was at war with the Arameans. The Aramean king sought to capture Elisha because the prophet’s insights and actions were aiding the Israelites in their defence.

The presence of an army:In this verse, Elisha’s servant, who was likely fearful due to the overwhelming Aramean forces surrounding them, was unable to perceive the spiritual reality. Elisha, however, saw beyond the physical realm and recognised the powerful spiritual army that was on their side.

Elisha’s prayer:Recognising his servant’s fear and lack of understanding, Elisha prayed to the Lord, asking Him to open his servant’s eyes. This prayer demonstrates Elisha’s faith and reliance on God’s supernatural intervention.

The revelation:God answered Elisha’s prayer, and the young man’s eyes were opened to see the spiritual realm. He saw a mountain full of horses and chariots of fire, representing God’s heavenly army. This revelation brought assurance and confidence, revealing that God’s power far surpassed the might of the Arameans.

Now, let’s explore the deeper meanings and lessons we can draw from this passage:

Spiritual perception:The young man’s initial inability to see the spiritual reality parallels our human tendency to rely solely on our physical senses and limited understanding. The passage reminds us that there is a spiritual realm that is just as real, if not more so, than the physical world we perceive.

Faith and prayer:Elisha’s response to the situation exemplifies the power of faith and prayer. Instead of succumbing to fear or despair, he turned to God, seeking His intervention. Through his prayer, Elisha demonstrated trust in God’s ability to reveal the unseen and provide divine assistance.

God’s protection:The revelation of the angelic army surrounding Elisha highlights God’s unwavering protection and care for His people. Even in the face of overwhelming odds, God’s power and provision exceed human comprehension. This truth encourages us to trust in God’s presence and ability to guide us through difficult circumstances.

God’s sovereignty and victory:The presence of the heavenly army conveys the message that God is in control. The forces aligned against God’s people were ultimately powerless in the face of God’s might. This serves as a reminder that no matter how daunting the challenges we face, God is the ultimate victor, and He fights on behalf of His people.

Overall, 2 Kings 6:17 reminds us of the importance of spiritual perception, faith, prayer, and God’s unwavering protection. It encourages us to trust in God’s sovereignty and rely on His power rather than being consumed by fear or discouraged by external circumstances.
