2 Kings 6:2

Posted on 18 May at 11:41
Listen to this article

“Let us go, we pray thee, unto Jordan, and take thence every man a beam, and let us make us a place there, where we may dwell. And he answered, Go ye.”

This verse is a part of a larger narrative that tells the story of the prophet Elisha and the sons of the prophets. It provides us with insights into the character of Elisha and the faith and determination of the sons of the prophets.

Here are a few key points to consider in this Bible study:

Context:The preceding verses in 2 Kings 6 talk about how the sons of the prophets found their dwelling place too small and decided to build a larger place to live. They sought permission from Elisha, who granted it.

Unity and Community:The sons of the prophets recognised the need for a larger dwelling place. Instead of separating and finding individual solutions, they came together and approached Elisha as a community. This demonstrates the importance of unity and communal living among believers. It encourages us to value and support one another as we pursue God’s purposes.

Initiative and Work Ethic:The sons of the prophets didn’t expect Elisha to do all the work for them. They proposed a plan to go to the Jordan River, gather beams, and construct their new dwelling themselves. This verse teaches us the importance of taking initiative, working diligently, and not relying solely on others to fulfil our needs or desires.

God’s Guidance:Elisha’s response, “Go ye,” reveals his trust in the plan and his affirmation of their initiative. It implies that God was leading and guiding them in their endeavour. This verse reminds us that when we seek God’s guidance and take steps of faith, He will affirm and bless our efforts.

The Symbolism of the Jordan River:The sons of the prophets chose the Jordan River as the source of the beams for their new dwelling. The Jordan River held great significance in the biblical narrative, symbolising crossing over into a new season or a new phase of God’s work. In this context, it could represent a transition for the sons of the prophets, moving into a larger place of dwelling and greater effectiveness in their ministry.

Overall, 2 Kings 6:2 teaches us the importance of unity, initiative, and seeking God’s guidance in our endeavours. It encourages us to actively participate in God’s work, using our skills and resources to bring about His purposes in our lives and communities.

Note: It’s always beneficial to read the surrounding verses and consult commentaries or study resources to gain a deeper understanding of the passage and its significance within the broader biblical context.
