2 Kings 6:4

Listen to this article

So hee went with them: and when they came to Iordane, they cut downe wood. 2 Kings 6:4 (KJV)

This verse is part of a larger narrative in the book of 2 Kings that describes the ministry of the prophet Elisha. During Elisha’s time, the sons of the prophets, who were students and followers of the prophets, were facing a challenge of limited space in their dwelling place. They sought permission from Elisha to go and build a larger place to live. The ‘sons of the prophets’ were a group of individuals who were under the instruction and guidance of the prophets, including Elisha. They were students and disciples of the prophets and sought to learn from them. This indicates the importance of mentorship and the passing down of spiritual knowledge from one generation to the next.

The sons of the prophets did not act independently but sought permission from Elisha before proceeding with their plan. This demonstrates their respect for the authority and wisdom of their spiritual leader. It is essential for believers to seek godly counsel and guidance from experienced and knowledgeable individuals when making important decisions.

The sons of the prophets went to the Jordan River to gather wood for their construction project. The Jordan River holds significance in the Bible as a place of crossing, representing a transition or change. The sons of the prophets engaged in physical labour by cutting down wood. This action signifies their willingness to work diligently and invest their efforts in fulfilling the task they were given. It teaches us the importance of combining faith with action. While they had sought God’s permission and guidance, they also understood the need for practical work to accomplish their goal.

Cutting down timber required effort and persistence. Similarly, we should be diligent in our endeavours, not losing heart in the face of challenges, and continuing to work towards our goals. The sons of the prophets worked together to accomplish their task. This emphasises the value of unity and collaboration within the body of Christ. We are called to support and encourage one another, working together for the advancement of God’s kingdom.

By studying this verse and its context, we can glean valuable insights into seeking guidance, embracing change, combining faith with action, demonstrating diligence, and fostering community within the body of believers.
