2 Kings 7:14

“They took therefore two chariot horses; and the king sent after the host of the Syrians, saying, Go and see.”

Context:This verse is part of the narrative in 2 Kings chapter 7 that recounts the story of the siege of Samaria by the Syrian army during the time of Elisha the prophet. Samaria was the capital of the northern kingdom of Israel. The city was under a severe famine, and the Syrian army had besieged it, causing great suffering among the Israelites.

Desperation and Divine Intervention:Prior to this verse, four lepers who were living outside the city gates of Samaria discovered that the Syrian army had fled their camp, leaving behind their tents, provisions, and belongings. These lepers had reached a point of desperation, and they took the risk of entering the Syrian camp to find food. As they ate and collected valuable items, their consciences pricked them, realising it was not right to keep this good news to themselves. They decided to inform the king and his people about the abandoned camp (2 Kings 7:3-9).

Lesson:God can intervene in desperate situations in unexpected ways. When we trust in Him and step out in faith, even in desperate times, He can bring about miraculous deliverance.

The King’s Skepticism:In response to the lepers’ report, the king of Israel was skeptical and thought it might be a trap set by the Syrians (2 Kings 7:12). He hesitated to act upon the information and sent a small reconnaissance party to verify the lepers’ claims.

Lesson:Doubt and scepticism can hinder us from receiving the blessings and deliverance God has for us. It is important to exercise faith and act on God’s promises, even when circumstances appear uncertain or unlikely.

The Confirmation:Following the king’s decision to investigate, they took two chariot horses and sent a group to the Syrian camp to confirm the lepers’ report. When they arrived, they found the camp deserted, just as the lepers had described. The confirmation of the lepers’ words strengthened the faith of the Israelites and provided relief from the famine.

Lesson:God’s promises are trustworthy and reliable. He fulfils His word, even when circumstances seem impossible or unlikely. Confirmation of God’s faithfulness can strengthen our faith and bring relief in times of difficulty.

Taking Action:Upon confirming the lepers’ report, the Israelites went into the Syrian camp, gathering provisions and plundering the deserted tents. The famine ended abruptly as food became readily available to the starving people.

Lesson:Faith requires action. The Israelites had to take the step of entering the Syrian camp and seizing the provisions. Likewise, we need to act upon God’s promises and take the necessary steps to receive the blessings He has in store for us.

God’s Sovereign Plan:It is important to recognise that behind this account of deliverance from famine, God was fulfilling a prophetic word spoken by Elisha in 2 Kings 7:1. God used the lepers’ discovery and the king’s actions to bring about His plan and rescue His people.

Lesson:God is sovereign and works in mysterious ways to accomplish His purposes. Even in dire circumstances, He can use unlikely means and people to bring about His deliverance and fulfil His promises.

Overall, 2 Kings 7:14 highlights the themes of divine intervention, faith, scepticism, confirmation, action, and God’s sovereign plan. It encourages us to trust in God’s faithfulness, overcome doubt, and take action based on His promises.
