2 Kings 8:12

Listen to this article

“And Hazael said, Why weepeth my lord? And he answered, Because I know the evil that thou wilt do unto the children of Israel: their strongholds wilt thou set on fire, and their young men wilt thou slay with the sword, and wilt dash their children, and rip up their women with child.”

Context:This verse is part of the narrative of the prophet Elisha and his interaction with Hazael, who would become the king of Syria. At this point in the story, Elisha was speaking to Hazael about the future actions he would take against the people of Israel.

Historical Background:

  • During this time, the kingdoms of Israel and Syria were frequently engaged in conflict and political maneuvering.
  • Hazael, a prominent military commander, served under King Ben-Hadad of Syria. Later, he would usurp the throne and become the king himself (2 Kings 8:15).
  • The Lord had revealed to Elisha that Hazael would carry out devastating acts against Israel, resulting in great suffering.

Elisha’s Insight:

  • Elisha, as a prophet of God, had received divine insight into the future actions of Hazael.
  • This verse reveals Elisha’s deep distress upon realizing the terrible deeds that Hazael would perpetrate against the children of Israel.
  • Elisha wept because he foresaw the brutalities that would be inflicted upon the people of Israel, including the destruction of their strongholds, the killing of young men, and the violent treatment of women and children.

The Consequences of Sin:

  • This verse highlights the consequences of the sins and disobedience of the Israelites. Throughout the books of 1 and 2 Kings, the Israelites repeatedly turned away from God, worshiped idols, and rejected His commandments.
  • As a result of their disobedience, God allowed neighbouring nations, such as Syria, to bring judgement upon Israel.
  • The actions described in this verse reveal the severity of the consequences that awaited Israel because of their persistent rebellion against God.

God’s Sovereignty and Foreknowledge:

  • This passage demonstrates God’s sovereign control over events and His ability to reveal future events to His prophets.
  • Even before Hazael took the throne, God knew the evil he would bring upon Israel. The Lord revealed this to Elisha, allowing him to have foreknowledge of the impending events.
  • God’s foreknowledge reminds us of His omniscience and His ability to see beyond our present circumstances, even when facing difficult and distressing situations.

Application for Believers:

  • The passage serves as a reminder to remain faithful to God and His commandments, avoiding the consequences that come with disobedience.
  • It also encourages believers to trust in God’s sovereignty and seek His guidance in all circumstances, knowing that He holds the future in His hands.
  • The passage calls for compassion and intercession on behalf of others. Elisha’s weeping demonstrates his concern and empathy for the suffering of the Israelites, urging believers to have a heart for those in distress and pray for their well-being.

In summary, 2 Kings 8:12 reveals the foreknowledge of God through the prophet Elisha concerning the future actions of Hazael against the children of Israel. The passage reminds us of the consequences of sin, the sovereignty of God, and the importance of compassion and intercession for those in distress.
